he was on "meet the press" with david gregory a couple weeks ago and said i wouldn't repeal everything in obama occasion i would keep popular elements and within 24 hours his aides were saying, not exactly. i find that a little confusing. he has to figure out a way to have a consistent message that is credible and appeals to the swing voters he needs, especially white women. that's his target tonight. >> i think they pull that back -- >> karen, haven't we seen this process throughout this campaign? mr. romney says something, 24 hours later, the campaign goes out and says, he didn't mean that. he meant something else. >> here's the problem, every time romney thinks off the top of his head of something, which is probably why he was practicing zingers, he says something his campaign has to walk back. that's the greatest danger for him in his campaign. the reason they walked back that 17,000 cap comment f you looked at the statement from the campaign very carefully talked about that the president -- that governor romney, no kind of redistributive, you know, idea. i think wealthy

's what this is going to come down to, and i'll tell you what, last week you saw the difference. an unfiltered mitt romney and an unfiltered barack obama. you saw inspiration, heart, preparedness from mitt romney, and you saw a president that came in unprepared, uninspiring. you know at, maybe clint eastwood was right, and i think that's what the american people saw last week. >> let me ask you about the -- we have some idea of the democrats fundraising in september. the totally, the re-election campaign as well as the democratic committee. $180 million in september. that's 1.8 million individual doneors, 567,000 first-time done ovrz. that's ab impressive number. are you going to match it? >> i don't know if we're going to match it, but it is an impressive number. >> are you close? >> i can't tell you that right now, but i will say this. i think we all understand that this race isn't going to come down because we've been very competitive, and if you roll the tape, i have been calling -- i have been saying that president obama is going to raise $1 billion for a year and a half. r

.m. example. how many times did obama miss in the debate this week to pin romney down on the specific question of okay, you want to cut taxes across the board, you want to be deficit neutral and you have a broad promise to close loopholes and deductions. let's spell ought out what the deductions are. let's specify mitt romney which ones you say you'll go after and which ones you'll protect. biden is really -- i think you're right. ryan we see in this campaign, interviews he had something new. follow-up questions. >> when we come back, we're going to talk more about this. we know there's a problem of biden bromance. i want to know whether or not paul ryan is willing to go hard in for mitt romney. i'm going to gargle during the break. or get the yard ready for cool an energy weather?n to size? the answer? a lot less. the great american fix-up is going on now... ...with new projects every week and big savings every day. so you can do what needs to be done. today. more saving. more doing. that's the power of the home depot. right now, owens corning ecotouch attik insulation is only $11.87 a roll.

for the obama white house waging what has been an uphill battle against unemployment. this week the labor department reported the jobless rate fell sharply in september to 7.8%. that's the same level it was when president obama took office back in january 2009. actual growth last month was modest, only 114,000 jobs created. but the labor department also revised the july and august numbers to include an additional 86,000 new jobs. let's talk about it with the former white house chief economist austin goulsby. austin, thanks very much for coming in. what does this jobs report mean to you? >> well, i think it's a good sign. you know when i was in the white house i used to say every month good or bad, you never want to make too much out of any one month's numbers because it's plus or minus 100,000 jobs is the margin of error. so there's a lot of variability. >> what does that mean? >> this is a solid report. >> when you say plus or minus margin of error of 100,000 jobs, in other words if 114,000 jobs were created last month, it really could have 214,000 or it could have been 14,000? >> or 14,

in the key battleground commonwealth at vmi. romney team sensing a clear hoping here against president obama with all that has happened in the middle east over the past few weeks and months, especially in libya. nia, what do you think governor romney reveals tomorrow? does he reveal anything significant? >> well, my guess is he probably won't. we've seen mitt romney give several major foreign policy speeches, one last year down in south carolina. he gave another out in nevada. of course, he had the foreign policy trip. he's obviously trying to make headway around this libya issue, which, in fact, if you read a lot of the reports coming out about the administration's handling of this, he has a real case to press against this administration in terms of the shifting reasons that the libya thing actually happened. so i think he's really going to talk not only about american exceptionalism, but also talk about america being a leader in the world and make the case that obama has not led, not been a strong leader on iran, on the middle east, the arab spring. that's what he'll do. i think the questi

think it's going to play out. the obama team obviously knows they had a poor showing in last week's debate. so they've got to gain some traction here. booiden is a really good debate. i think you'll see ryan be mr. wonky. that's his role. a lot of numbers you'll hear from him. probably more zingers from biden. i think they have some ground to make up. >> you know, i don't think a lot of people necessarily realize how much debating joe biden has done throughout the course of his career. he's run for president six or seven times. i exaggerate for effect. chair of the foreign relations committee. here's a guy who's spent a great deal of time in public in a healthy exchange of ideas. >> that's right. that's right. i think we'll see that on display. if you look back at 2008, he was probably the best debater out of the field. i think he's going to bring those skills to bear. he had a real high-wire act last time in 2008 when he had to go against sarah palin. i think he came out of that debate looking like the statesman. i think ryan has to pass the commander in chief test. i'm not sure

presidential in that group. we'll see how he does next to president obama which i think is a little bit different. >> yeah. >> that ohio poll is interesting because the cbs one we had last week had it at ten points. now we have another one showing it at nine points. if you start to look at the map, if he doesn't take iowa, if it gets away from him, it becomes difficult to put a puzzle together to win. >> by the way, there has been this narrative that there is the grand conspiracy and that the polls are skewed. this is what walter mondale said in 1984. this is what moveon.org said in 2004, that all the polls were skewed against john kerry and moveon.org said you just wait. and now you're hearing it frantically on the other side, which ironically, again, they are putting fox news in the grand conspiracy. >> what about the conference call today that we have to plan and organize? >> exactly. my point is here we've got a couple of local polls that are showing this, and more importantly, and you guys talk to the romney people all the time. i certainly talk to them all the time. i can tell you

senior romney advisors this past week. one advisor said to me there are three things, three kinds of people we need to talk to, three ds he calls it, the dissatisfied, disem pointed and disenchanted with barack obama, number one. and that what mitt romney has to do is convince people that four years from now a mitt romney presidency will be better for their personal lives. they understand on the likability question of which the president beats mitt romney so handily, they're not about to convince all these people suddenly to turn around and say, oh, we like mitt romney more than we like president obama. what they're going to try and do is say you like him enough and he can do the job and he's better able to fix things. so he's not going to try and be bill clinton here, i feel your pain. but what he's going to try to do is say i'm focused on your concerns. >> can a debate like tonight's debate really change the direction of this campaign? >> i think it can accelerate or decrease momentum one way or another. and i went back and looked at 2004 for example when you had john kerry and
